Showcase Southampton is running a double bill of Julia Donaldson's children's books from 7 July to 1 August, with The Smeds and The Smoos and The Snail and the Whale playing back-to-back. Both are animated adaptations of her books, so it's two of her stories in one sitting rather than just one. If you've read them with your kids, you'll know the drill: The Smeds and The Smoos is about two neighbouring families who can't stand each other, and The Snail and the Whale is the one with the tiny snail who hitches a ride on a humpback whale to see the world. Seeing them together on the big screen works well for a family afternoon, especially if you're already in town.
It's a good one for the school holidays, too. The run starts on 7 July and goes right through to 1 August, so you've got plenty of dates to choose from rather than just one weekend. If you're planning a day out with the kids, it's easy to slot in around other things — the cinema is in the Westquay shopping centre, so you're right in the middle of everything. You can do the films and then head for lunch or a bit of shopping without having to move the car.
