London Concertante, with violin soloist Mathilde Milwidsky, plays Johann Strauss II and other waltzes by candlelight in Sheffield Cathedral.
London Concertante bring the Viennese Christmas Spectacular to Sheffield Cathedral on Saturday 14 November, with violin soloist Mathilde Milwidsky joining them. It's a candlelight concert, so the whole thing is played by candlelight inside the cathedral, and the programme is built around the Viennese tradition.
At the centre of it is the music of Johann Strauss II, the 'Waltz King', whose works capture the wit and energy of 19th-century Vienna and culminate in The Blue Danube—the city's unofficial anthem, known as much from grand ballrooms as from the silver screen in 2001: A Space Odyssey. From there, the evening looks at the different moods the waltz can take: Shostakovich's jazz-infused Waltz No. 2, Sibelius's Valse triste, and music from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty. The second half turns to the golden age of operetta, with soprano favourites by Lehár, Suppé and Korngold.
London Concertante provides the ensemble, and Mathilde Milwidsky takes the violin solos. A bar is open before the concert and during the interval, so you can have a drink before you take your seat and another when the music breaks.
