Puccini's opera 'Madama Butterfly' staged by the Ukrainian National Opera (Dnipro Opera) in Italian with English surtitles and a live orchestra.
The Ukrainian National Opera brings Puccini's Madama Butterfly to Sheffield City Hall on Wednesday 17 March 2027. It's a production from the Dnipro Opera in Ukraine, sung in Italian with English surtitles, and accompanied by a live orchestra on the night.
Set in Japan at the turn of the twentieth century, the story follows Cio-Cio-San, a young geisha who gives up everything for love when she marries Pinkerton, an American naval officer. It's one of Puccini's most famous works, and the evening carries some of his most recognisable music: 'One Fine Day', the 'Love Duet', and the 'Humming Chorus' are all in there, so you'll likely recognise a good few of the melodies even if you've never seen the opera before.
Because it's performed in Italian, the English surtitles will be projected above the stage, so you can follow the plot in real time. The live orchestra provides the accompaniment, rather than a recording, which is how the piece was intended to be heard. It's a full production coming over from the Dnipro Opera, so it's a proper staged performance rather than a concert version.
