Second edition of Thomas Flinn & Co's pop-up shop with saw-sharpening and Clifton hand plane demonstrations, a turner's stall, a scissor maker and a Neepsend walking tour.
Thomas Flinn & Co are back at Victoria - Wedding & Events Venue on Sunday 1 November, their second pop-up shop in the city. Last year's went down well, and this one is a bit bigger and better, held in the same spot — run by neighbours of the company and right next to their own factory in Neepsend.
You can browse and buy saws, Clifton hand planes and other favourites, but the day is built around demonstrations. Dave Planes will be showing saw-sharpening and Clifton hand plane work, and turner Alfie Haigh, working under the name For the Love of Wood, will be selling turned pieces and taking commissions. There are a couple of special guests too: Ernest Wright, one of the last scissor makers still based in Sheffield, and a Neepsend walking tour run by Kelham Walks, which looks at the area's industrial past.
The venue serves teas, coffees, cakes, lunch items and drinks throughout the day, so it's easy to make a morning of it. If you've got time to spare, the site is about a ten-minute walk from the Kelham Island Industrial Museum, which celebrates Sheffield's industrial heritage and houses the River Don Engine, a 425-ton steam engine. It's a good spot to pair with the pop-up if you're coming from across the city.
