Exhibition of the historic Sykes Gallery Metalwork Collection, featuring over 800 items of Sheffield-made cutlery, flatware and holloware.
The Sykes Gallery Metalwork Collection is on display at the Millennium Gallery on Arundel Gate. It's a permanent part of the gallery, so it's there whenever you fancy a wander through the city's metalworking history.
Sheffield Museums' metalwork collection is one of the finest in the world, with around 13,000 items in total. It's thought to be the most extensive grouping of Sheffield-made cutlery, flatware and holloware in existence, and it was awarded Designated Status by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport in 1999. The gallery itself shows about 800 of those objects, alongside a rotating programme of temporary exhibitions and an interactive cutlery map that traces the city's makers past and present.
The range on display covers a huge span of time. You'll find an Old Sheffield Plate soup tureen from 1790-1810, a gold and enamel cup by Helena M Ibbotson from 1929, and a sterling silver candelabra by Chris Knight from 2004. At the other end of the scale are iron and steel knives and shears dating from 1200-1400. The room also houses the Guild of St George's Ruskin Collection, devoted to the Victorian artist and writer John Ruskin.
