Night of folk-pop from The Gentle Spring, the improvisational show of Hibbett & Christopher and the pop energy of First Prize at Sidney & Matilda.
The Gentle Spring play Sidney & Matilda on Friday 29 January, with support from First Prize, MJ Hibbett and Chris T-T. It's a full night of music, running from 19:00 to 22:30, with the headliners taking the later slot.
The Gentle Spring are an Anglo-French band fronted by Michael Hiscock, who you might know from The Field Mice. They describe their sound as sitting somewhere between acoustic storytelling and jangly pop, so it's a bit of a folk-pop thing—songs that lean on the voice and the lyrics as much as the guitars. If you've followed Hiscock's work, that'll probably sound familiar, but this is his own project, and the Anglo-French mix brings its own particular flavour to the songs.
They aren't the only act on the bill. First Prize bring a more direct pop energy to the night, while MJ Hibbett and Chris T-T handle the earlier support slots with a witty, improvisational approach. Between the three of them, the evening moves from that lighter, more off-the-cuff start towards the more structured folk-pop of The Gentle Spring, so the mood shifts as the night goes on.
