Norwegian string quartet The EngegÄrd Quartet plays joiks, psalms and bridal marches in the 'Northern Lights: Norwegian Folk' concert series.
The EngegÄrd Quartet play Firth Hall at the University of Sheffield on Sunday 29 November, as part of the NORTHERN LIGHTS: NORWEGIAN FOLK series presented by Music in the Round. It's a Sunday matinee, starting at 13:30, so it's one of those early-afternoon concerts that doesn't eat into your whole day.
The programme is built around the quartet's own arrangements of traditional joiksâone of Europe's oldest song traditionsâpaired with haunting psalms and spirited bridal marches. It's a set that leans into the folk side of their work, with the joiks at the centre of it.
There's a bit of history to the group that explains why they're playing this particular material. The EngegĂ„rd Quartet formed under the midnight sun in Lofoten in 2005 and has since become one of Norway's most sought-after ensembles. They've built a reputation for bold, fresh interpretations of the classical repertoire, but they've always kept a deep attachment to their Scandinavian roots. They have a particular affinity for Mozart and Beethoven, and a profound commitment to Norwegian musicâso this concert sits right in the middle of those two interests, bringing folk traditions into a chamber music setting.
