Talk on the history of the Sheffield company Spear and Jackson, a giant of the hand and garden tool trade since 1760.
Kelham Island Museum is hosting a talk on The Story of Spear and Jackson on Wednesday 28 October, from 2pm to 3pm. It's a look at one of Sheffield's own: a company that traces its roots back to 1760 and grew from there to become one of the giants of the hand and garden tool trade.
If you've spent any time in a garden centre or a hardware shop, you've almost certainly come across the name. The talk follows the company's trajectory from those early days in the 18th century, when Sheffield was the heart of the steel and tool trade, through to its expansion into a household name. It's a Sheffield story in the truest sense, and hearing it told in a museum that sits right in the middle of the city's industrial heritage feels about as right as it gets.
The session is organised by the Ken Hawley Collection Trust, and if you find yourself wanting more after the hour is up, their collection is something you can explore further at www.hawleytoolcollection.com.
