Live show by the Canadian punk metal trio Sumo Cyco, fronted by Sever, at Corporation in Sheffield.
Sumo Cyco play Corporation on Friday 11 December, bringing their particular blend of punk metal and dancehall to Sheffield. They're a female-fronted trio from Ontario, Canada, and they describe their sound as genre-smashing — heavy riffs and blast beats sitting alongside dancehall rhythms and pop hooks, all wrapped in a cinematic DIY flair.
At the front is Sever, the alter-ego of former teen-pop sensation Skye Sweetnam. She signed to Sony/ATV at 14 and played in more than 25 countries before her 17th birthday, including 50 shows opening for Britney Spears on the Onyx Hotel tour. She eventually left the major label to form this band with co-writer, producer and guitarist Matt Drake and bassist Oscar Anesetti. The three have built a world around their music, Cyco City, which has earned them a cult global following.
They've released three albums: Lost in Cyco City (2014), Opus Mar (2017) and Initiation (2021), and have more than 12 million Spotify streams. They took home Best Female-Fronted Band at the Toronto Independent Music Awards and have played Download, NXNE, Warped Tour and Indie Week Ireland, supporting Jinjer, Buckcherry and Nonpoint along the way.
