Concert by the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra with Louise Farrenc's Overture No. 2, Bottesini's double bass concerto and Mahler's Fifth Symphony.
Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra are at Victoria Hall on Saturday 14 November, with a programme that pulls from three very different corners of the orchestral repertoire. It's a night that trades on contrast, moving from a 19th-century French overture to a double bass concerto and finishing with one of the biggest symphonies of the 20th century.
The evening opens with Overture No. 2 by Louise Farrenc, one of the most significant French women composers of the 19th century. Her work sits in that transition between the classical elegance of the late 18th century and the energy and drama of early Romanticism, so it's a bright, spirited way to start.
The middle section is the rarity of the night: a double bass concerto by Giovanni Bottesini, who earned the nickname 'the Paganini of the double bass' for the way he pushed the instrument into the spotlight. It's performed by Nathan Knight, a double bassist billed as a rising star, so it's a good chance to hear an instrument that usually stays in the back of the orchestra taking centre stage.

The second half is dedicated entirely to Mahler's Fifth Symphony, a monumental piece that takes up a huge amount of ground. It opens with that famous trumpet fanfare, followed by a funeral march, and then the Adagietto, which is the movement most people recognise. From there it builds to a final blaze of energy and triumph, so the symphony carries the whole evening through to the end.
The concert runs from 19:30 to 21:30 at Victoria Hall on Norfolk Street, S1 2JB, with tickets from £7.50 to £14.00.
