A family-friendly open day at the Veolia Sheffield Depot where visitors can learn about waste and recycling, meet the Fire and Rescue Team, and enjoy craft and music activities.
Sheffield's Waste Wonder Day is on Saturday 17 October, a family open day run by Veolia Sheffield and Sheffield City Council that opens the Lumley Street Depot to the public. It's a look behind the scenes at how the city's waste and recycling actually work, and it's built for all ages, so it works as a trip out with kids as much as for anyone just curious about where the bins go.
There's plenty to do across the day. You can have a chat with the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Team, find out about Sheffield's Energy Recovery Facility, and get a proper handle on what can be recycled. There are hands-on bits too: Sheffield Clothing Repair will be there to help you reuse and repair old clothes, Scrap Dragon has crafting, and you can play on the Junk Orchestra. And if you've got kids who love the big trucks, there are bin wagons on site to take photos with.

The day runs from 10 am to 2 pm, with four staggered arrival slots to spread people out across the morning and early afternoon. Tickets are free and booked through Eventbrite, and the open day pass covers the depot event only — it doesn't include access to an ERF tour. The depot is at Lumley Street, Sheffield S4 7ZJ.
