The Stuttgart Philharmonic, conducted by Mariano Chiacchiarini with pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, plays Mendelssohn and Sibelius at Sheffield City Hall.
The Stuttgart Philharmonic make their debut at Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 19 November, as part of the Sheffield International Concert Season. It's their first time playing the hall, and they're led by conductor Mariano Chiacchiarini, who's been described as one of the most compelling conductors of his generation.
The programme sticks to familiar classics. It opens with Mendelssohn's overture, whose main theme the composer sketched on a postcard while visiting the echoing sea cave on Staffa. Then comes Sibelius' Fifth Symphony, which is presented as a musical depiction of an unfolding landscape — the swooping horn calls are meant to conjure a sunrise over the Nordic horizon, and it ends with six massive chords separated by silence.
In between, pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason performs one of Mozart's most celebrated piano concertos. She's a welcome return to Sheffield, so if you've seen her play here before, this is a good chance to catch her again. The whole evening sits within the Sheffield International Concert Season, which brings a series of international acts to the city over the course of the year.
