Vocal folk and Beat-inspired poetry show by singer-songwriter Sarah Gillespie and guitarist Chris Montague.
Sarah Gillespie plays Cafe No.9 on Thursday 12 November, joined on guitar by Chris Montague. Gillespie is a London-based singer and published poet whose vocal folk has drawn comparisons with Bob Dylan — The Guardian called her an 'incandescent presence with superior lyrics' and The Times likened her to 'Dylan on amphetamines'. She's toured internationally for 15 years and has appeared on BBC arts and culture programmes like Woman's Hour and Loose Ends.
Montague is one of the UK's most distinctive guitar voices; Marlbank called him 'the UK's greatest jazz guitarist since John McLaughlin' and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers described him as 'rootsy, adventurous'. The two have a history that goes back further than this tour: Montague co-wrote five tracks on Gillespie's last album, and he brings an edge of rawness and unpredictability to the live show.
Their latest collaboration, The Shieling, came together in a particular way. After a run of intimate performances in California, they recorded the album in a cottage on the shores of Loch Fyne in Scotland. It's a stripped-back record that draws on folk, Americana, blues and Beat-inspired poetry, and that's the kind of material you'll hear them playing together here.
