Free performance and Q&A by Slambarz exploring the colonial legacy behind Sheffield's street names, part of Festival of the Mind 2026.
Right Up My Street comes to Channing Hall on Friday 13 November, a live music event that brings together performers from Slambarz. The afternoon is built around a performance followed by a Q&A, so you'll hear the work and then get a chance to talk through it with the people who made it.
The project takes its name from the street signs we walk past every day. It looks at the legacy of empire, transatlantic slavery and colonialism that sits behind Sheffield's street names, and turns that research into multimodal artwork. The whole thing is rooted in participatory research by Rob Cotterell, and the showcase is designed to show how creativity can change the way we engage with and understand contested heritage. It's presented as part of Festival of the Mind 2026 and is organised by Public Engagement at The University of Sheffield.
Because it's a live music event, the focus is on the performance itself, with the Q&A afterwards keeping the conversation going. The performers come from Slambarz, and the work they're presenting is the result of that research into the city's street names and the histories they carry. It's the kind of thing that works better in a room than on a page, where you can hear the music and then ask questions about how it all came together.
