Acoustic tribute to Leonard Cohen by Sheffield musicians Ric Booth, Alastair Gordon and El Heneghan, marking ten years since his death.
Ric Booth is playing Cafe No.9 on Saturday 7 November, with Alastair Gordon and El Heneghan joining him on stage. The night is a tribute to Leonard Cohen, marking ten years since his passing, and the set is drawn from across his whole career, pairing the deep cuts with the fan favourites. The arrangements are stripped back and acoustic, carried by guitar, double bass and accordion, and the set also takes in his 1980s drum-machine material.
It's a Sheffield line-up for a songwriter who spent his life in Montreal, and the acoustic setup keeps the focus on the songs rather than the production. The mix of deep cuts and favourites means it's not just a run through the hits; they're digging into the wider catalogue, and the inclusion of the 80s material brings in the more experimental side of his work, the stuff that sat alongside the more familiar ballads. With guitar, double bass and accordion, the sound is sparse and acoustic, and the whole thing is put together by local musicians.
