Gothic masquerade ceilidh where the Gothic Masquerade group plays geek-folk-rock and people dance in masquerade attire.
The Powerhouse Gothic Masquerade Ceilidh is back at Crookes Social Club on Sunday 25 October, a few days before Halloween. It's a ceilidh in the traditional sense — folk dancing called for the whole night — but with a specific twist that sets it apart from your usual folk club evening.
The music is what they call "electrifying geek-folk-rock ceilidh," a description that does a fair bit of heavy lifting. It's folk dancing at its core, but played with a full-band energy that leans more towards rock than a fiddle and accordion duo. The "geek" part comes from the crowd it draws, and the "gothic" from the theme that runs through the whole thing. It's a ceilidh for people who'd rather be in a costume than a flat cap.
That costume is a big part of the night. You're invited to turn up in your finest masquerade attire — masks, capes, the works — and dance the night away, commemorating the spookiest of seasons. If you've never been to a ceilidh, the basic idea is that the caller walks you through the steps of each dance, so you don't need to know anything beforehand to get involved. Between the calls, you're just dancing with whoever's on the floor.

It's a Sunday night, so it's one of those events that works as a standalone evening or as a way to stretch the weekend out. Doors open at 7.30pm, and the dancing runs from 8pm to 11pm, so you're in and out in a few hours. If you're planning on dressing up, you'll want to leave yourself a bit of time to get sorted before you head over to Crookes. The dancing starts at 8pm, and it keeps going until 11pm.
