A talk by Brian Groom on a people's history of the British Isles, part of the Off the Shelf: Festival of Words.
Brian Groom is at the Millennium Gallery on Friday 23 October, where he'll be talking through These Isles: A People's History of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It's a broad subject, and the title gives it away: he's looking at the history of the British Isles from the ground up, focusing on the people rather than the kings and queens who usually get the most ink in the history books.
The talk is part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words, the University of Sheffield's festival of ideas. The whole thing works by commissioning writers, researchers and speakers to bring their work out of the university and into the city, so this is one of those sessions where you get to hear a researcher talk about their subject in person rather than just reading it in a book. If you've ever wanted a run-down of the Isles that doesn't start and end with the royal line, this is exactly that.

It's a Friday night in the city centre, so it's an easy one to fit in. Tickets are £12, or £10 if you book in advance, and you'll need to book your spot beforehand. The talk is at the Millennium Gallery, and it's all part of the Off the Shelf programme, which runs across Sheffield throughout the festival.
