A dementia-friendly café session at Weston Park Museum for people with memory issues and their carers to reminisce.
Weston Park Museum is hosting a Memory Café on Thursday 19 November, a dementia-friendly session for people living with memory issues and their carers to spend a morning reminiscing together. It's one of those quiet, useful things that doesn't always get a loud shout, but it's a proper resource for families dealing with dementia.
The museum is on Western Bank, and it's a good spot for a morning like this. It tells the stories of Sheffield and its people from prehistory to the present day, so there's plenty of local history to draw on if you're looking for a starting point for a conversation. It first opened its doors in 1875 and has drawn visitors young and old for nearly 150 years, and it's home to a few museum favourites that most of us know: Spike the Woolly Rhino and Snowy the Polar Bear. There's also a café on site called Ambulo, which is where the session gets its name.
Beyond the café, the museum runs a programme of changing exhibitions and galleries, so if you've got time to linger, you can wander through Picturing Sheffield, Ancient Egypt, Beneath Your Feet, What On Earth, Sheffield Stories, and the Royle Gallery of temporary exhibitions. It's a decent spread of things to look at, from the city's own history to the far reaches of Egypt and the ground beneath your feet.
