Alternative comic Mark Thomas celebrates 40 years at the mic with a brand-new show, marking his long career in political satire and stand-up comedy.
Mark Thomas is coming to Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 22 October, playing the Memorial Hall. He's touring a brand-new show, 40 In Stand Up Years, which marks four decades at the mic. He's one of the oldest surviving alternative comics, and this is the show that puts the number on display.
If you've never seen him, Thomas is a politically motivated stand-up whose sharp wit and abrasive satire have made him a well-known performer since 1985. He's spent those years working far beyond the comedy circuit. He's toured the UK and abroad, made seven series of his own show for Channel 4, written six books and five play scripts, and produced five series of The Manifesto for Radio 4 and three Dispatches for Channel 4. He also writes a regular column for the New Statesman.
There's a fair bit of non-stage work in there, too. He's won eight awards for performing and four for his human rights work, and he holds a Guinness World Record for staging 20 protests in 24 hours. He's sued the police and won three times, and he's curated and authored two art exhibitions with the artist Tracey Moberly. The Sheffield date is part of a UK tour running from 16 October to 13 December, so this is one of the first stops on the run.
