Half-day outing by Sheffield Mountaineering of hiking and scramble-climbing on the Tors of Hope Valley-East and Mother Cap.
Sheffield Mountaineering are heading out to the Tors of Hope Valley-East on Sunday 1 November, with the day centred on Mother Cap. It's a five-hour outing that splits its time roughly half hiking and half scramble-climbing, so you'll get a fair bit of both on one trip.
For the uninitiated, scrambling is that middle ground between hiking and climbing: you're using your hands to scramble up rocky ground, but there's no actual trad climbing involved. That means no ropes and no gear required, so you don't need to own any kit to take part. The group does recommend some previous scrambling or rock-dabbling experience, though, so it's best if you've had a go at something similar before.
Sheffield Mountaineering is a long-established, friendly group based right here in the city, and they make the most of the Peak District on their doorstep. While they're best known for their scrambling, they've got a vibrant rock climbing scene alongside winter mountaineering, hiking, caving, abseiling and indoor climbing, catering to all levels of ability. They pride themselves on being a diverse, inclusive and multicultural group, and the regulars say this particular day is a fun one, with newcomers in safe hands.

Beyond the local hills, they run regular trips to Snowdonia, the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands and mainland Europe, so if you're looking for a way into the outdoors, this is a good place to start. The outing kicks off at 10:00 from Burbage North car park (Burbage North, Hope Valley S32 1BR, Sheffield), and a £2 donation per person is requested towards Meet Up site fees and operating costs.
