Bluegrass band Hayseed Dixie performs hillbilly rock covers at the Corporation venue in Sheffield, with guest support from Sweet Electric.
Hayseed Dixie play Corporation on Wednesday 21 October, with guest support from Sweet Electric. If you've never come across them, the name is a bit of a giveaway: they're a hillbilly band from East Tennessee, and their whole thing is taking rock, pop and metal songs and reworking them as bluegrass. It's exactly what it sounds like — acoustic instruments playing songs you'd usually hear on an electric guitar, played with a rock and roll attitude.
There's a funny story to how they started. Barley Scotch, also known as John Wheeler, found some old AC/DC vinyl records in a wrecked car near Deer Lick Holler in East Tennessee and played them on a 78rpm Victrola. That led to their first album, A Hillbilly Tribute To AC/DC, which came out on 17 April 2001. It featured hillbilly versions of ten AC/DC songs and sold more than 200,000 copies in its first year in the US. Since then, they've released another 17 studio albums of the same sort — hillbilly re-workings of rock, pop and metal songs, alongside plenty of their own originals, all played on acoustic bluegrass instruments. It's a long run of records, and they've kept to that same basic idea for over two decades.
