Free community talk where photographer Peter Andrew Richardson and local historian Carol Jepson explore Sheffield's history with images, maps and old photographs.
Peter Andrew Richardson and Carol Jepson are coming to the Carpenter Room at Sheffield Central Library on Friday 30 October, for a talk on discovering Sheffield's past. Richardson is a photographer and Jepson a local historian, and they'll be working together to trace the city's history through a mix of images and stories.
They'll be drawing on a fair few sources for the session: images from their books, historic buildings, old maps, archive photographs, and Richardson's own modern-day photographs. The idea is to look at the city from a couple of different angles at once, and they'll be sharing the stories of the people and places that helped shape Sheffield along the way. It's as much about the people as the buildings, so expect a bit of local lore to go with the visuals.
They're also taking the audience behind the scenes of how their books came together, from the initial research and writing through to the photography and design. If you've ever wondered how a local history project actually gets made, that's where you'll find the answer. They'll wrap the whole thing up with a visual quiz based on the buildings they've covered in the series, so you can test how much you've picked up.
