Festive folk supergroup A Winter Union plays Christmas songs, carols and winter classics at Firth Hall in Sheffield.
A Winter Union play Firth Hall on Friday 11 December, their Sheffield date in a run that brings them back to the stage each winter. They're a folk supergroup that first came together in 2015, when five leading lights of the UK folk scene decided to reconvene every December and share their Christmas party with audiences across the country. They describe themselves as a harmony group, and that's the core of it: five voices singing together.
The set they build from is wide. They draw on Americana, Christmas, traditional folk, carols, country and traditional Celtic music, reimagining winter classics from both sides of the Atlantic alongside little-known Yuletide gems and songs written by the five songwriters themselves. It's a mix of the familiar and the obscure, with the harmony singing tying it all together. The critics have been on board, too: Songlines called it 'the only Christmas album you'll ever need', Folk On Foot described them as a 'festive folk supergroup', and BBC Radio 3's InTune rated it 'Just Fantastic!'.
There's something new to hear this time around. The group released their third studio album, Through The Western Door, in December 2026, so this show falls right into that window. It's a good time to catch them live, with the new material fresh and the older songs still in the rotation.
