Dance work by Sonya Tayeh, a meditation on voice and protest set to the music of Sinéad O'Connor and narration from her memoir 'Rememberings'.
Sonya Tayeh brings The Surge: An Ode to Sinéad O'Connor to The 5th Avenue Theatre on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2027. It's a new dance work conceived, choreographed, and directed by Tayeh, and it's part of Seattle Theatre Group's 2026-2027 Performing Arts Series.
On stage, a company of ten women performs to the music of Sinéad O'Connor, with narration drawn from O'Connor's memoir, Rememberings. Tayeh describes the piece as fierce, unflinching, and tender—a meditation on voice, protest, and the courage to defy the norm. It's a dance work built around O'Connor's music and her own words, so the whole thing stays close to her voice.
Tayeh is an internationally celebrated choreographer and director, best known for winning the Tony for outstanding choreography for Moulin Rouge! The Musical. This is a new piece of her own, and she's the one who conceived, choreographed, and directed it.
