Open studio with woodblock printmaking by featured artist Fulgencio Lazo, where visitors can watch artists at work and create alongside them.
Fulgencio Lazo is taking over the print shop at The Studio at SAM on Saturday, October 17, from 11 AM to 3 PM. The Studio is on the fourth floor of the Seattle Art Museum, and for this session, Lazo will be working with woodblock printmaking. It's an open studio, so you can watch him work, ask questions, and make your own prints alongside him while he's at it.
Lazo is a Zapotec painter and printmaker whose work is rooted in his cultural heritage, and he splits his time between Seattle and Oaxaca, Mexico. He's been exhibiting internationally for more than three decades and has spent years as a cultural organizer in Seattle's Latino community—he actually helped establish the museum's DĂa de los Muertos celebrations over 30 years ago. If you're already at the museum, you can see his 32nd-annual tapete, a woodblock floorwork created for DĂa de los Muertos, on view right next to the print shop.
The Studio at SAM turns the museum's fourth floor into an open studio where visitors can watch artists work, ask questions, and create alongside them. The space includes a print shop, a lounge, and a reading nook, and the museum names a new local artist each month. All activities are drop-in and first-come, first-served, so there's no registration required—you just show up when you're ready. For SAM members, Member Nights on the second Thursday of each month come with a free drink and the studio to themselves.
