The Paperboys celebrate their 30th year with their Celtic and bluegrass-influenced folk rock, a freewheeling blend of world music styles.
The Paperboys are back at The Triple Door for their 19th annual Thanksgiving weekend run, this time playing three nights: Friday, Nov 27, Saturday, Nov 28, and Sunday, Nov 29. It's a long-standing tradition for them in Seattle, and this year marks their 30th anniversary.
Vancouver musician Tom Landa is the one leading the band, and he's using this milestone to look back at everything they've built. For more than a quarter century, The Paperboys have toured the world with a sound that's hard to pin down—a mix of Celtic, bluegrass, Mexican son jarocho, brass bands, and Canadian roots. Over the years, people have called it everything from Cajun slamgrass to worldbeat. They've put out nine albums, won a Juno award, and picked up two Juno nominations and two West Coast Music Awards along the way. They're no strangers to the Pacific Northwest, where they regularly play two-night bills.
Landa says the awards matter less to him than hearing from people whose lives the songs have helped through. He points to "Better Than The Last," which has become an anthem for folks who've gone through hard times. That's the kind of thing that gives the whole anniversary run some weight beyond just the number of years on the clock.
