Taproot Theatre production of Connie Ray's play 'Smoke on the Mountain', about the Sanders Family Singers in 1938 Appalachia, for the theatre's 50th anniversary.
Taproot Theatre is bringing Smoke on the Mountain back to the Isaac Studio Theatre, 212 N 85th St, for a run that opens October 7 and goes through November 7. It's part of the theatre's 50th Anniversary season, so it's a return to a show they've staged before.
The story is set in the summer of 1938 in Appalachia. It follows the Sanders Family Singers, a gospel group returning to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church after five years away on the gospel circuit. Each member of the family has a story to tell, and the show unfolds as they share those stories with the congregation. The music is bluegrass harmonies and heart-warming hymns, and the comedy comes from the family dynamics and the tales they spin. It's a book by Connie Ray, conceived by Alan Bailey, with musical arrangements by Mike Craver and Mark Hardwick.

If you're planning to go, there are a few ways to get in. Single and group tickets are on sale now, but there's also a 'Pay What You Can' performance on Wednesday, October 14 at 7 PM, which is a good option if you want to see it without a fixed ticket price. The run is a month long, so you've got plenty of dates to choose from between October 7 and November 7.
