An all-inclusive improv jam session featuring funk and jazz, open to all instrumentalists, vocalists, and turntablists.
Mo' Jam Mondays is back at Nectar Lounge on Monday, October 19, for another night of open-mic improv. It's an all-inclusive jam session that's run every Monday since 2013, started by Seattle drummer Morgan 'Mo' Gilkeson. He describes it as the kind of genre-fusion jam that might happen in a basement, and over the years it's grown into the city's largest indoor/outdoor funk and jazz session.
The night is rooted in jazz traits—improvisation, group play, and big-band orchestration—but it's not a traditional jazz jam. Tunes are rarely called, and musicians don't swing in the way of a standard session. It's open to all instrumentalists, vocalists, percussionists, emcees, and turntablists, and the house band is The Morganica Quartet, with a featured guest-host musician each week.
Before it landed at Nectar Lounge, the sessions moved around a bit. They started at The Scarlet Tree, then went to Tiny Ninja Cafe in Fremont, and then to Stone Way Cafe, before settling at Nectar Lounge, Seattle's largest indoor/outdoor venue, which has been open since 2004.
