Pacific Northwest Ballet presents George Balanchine's classic Nutcracker ballet, with music by Tchaikovsky and scenic and costume design by Ian Falconer.
Pacific Northwest Ballet brings The Nutcracker back to McCaw Hall starting Friday, November 27, and it runs through December 27. It's the company's holiday staple, and this particular version is George Balanchine's choreography set to Tchaikovsky's music. The scenic and costume design is by Ian Falconer.
If you're not familiar with the name, Balanchine is one of the biggest figures in 20th-century ballet. Born in St. Petersburg, he moved to the U.S. in late 1933 at the invitation of Lincoln Kirstein. Together they founded the School of American Ballet in 1934 and the New York City Ballet in 1948, where Balanchine stayed as ballet master and principal choreographer until he died in 1983. He left behind more than 400 works, including Serenade (1934), Orpheus (1948), Agon (1957), and Vienna Waltzes (1977).

This Nutcracker premiered on February 2, 1954, with the New York City Ballet. It's been a part of PNB's holiday season for over a decade, with its company premiere on November 27, 2015. The production runs 2 hours and 3 minutes, which includes a 25-minute intermission. It's a long run—nearly two months of performances—so you've got plenty of dates to choose from between the opening on November 27 and the close on December 27.
