A vibrant community celebration of Diwali featuring art-making workshops, live performances, a tiny tot fashion show, henna, a polaroid photo booth, street food, and Garba movement.
The Seattle Asian Art Museum is hosting a Diwali Community Celebration on Saturday, October 17, from 11 AM to 4 PM. Diwali is the Festival of Lights, one of India's most vibrant cultural celebrations, and the day is built around art-making, performance and street food. It's part of the museum's Community Celebrations series: free, family-friendly events produced with community partners that pair art-making with performances and unexpected art experiences, bringing in audiences of all ages with dance workshops, performance art, DJs and more. PNC Bank is a major sponsor of the series.
Inside the Education Studio, heritage artist and educator Deepti Agrawal leads art-making sessions throughout the day. The rest of the program fills in around that: live performances, a tiny tot fashion show, henna, and a polaroid photo booth. Outside, an Indian street-food truck serves up food, and there's Garba movement to get people on their feet. Between the activities, you can walk through the galleries and see The Art of Visual Storytelling, a youth art exhibition that runs alongside the celebration.

It's a full day that works for different speeds—you can spend a few hours in the studio with Agrawal, drop in for the performances and the food truck, or take your time with the galleries and the youth exhibition. Tickets are free, though they're timed and space is limited, so it's worth grabbing yours early if you're planning to go. The celebration runs from 11 AM to 4 PM on Saturday, October 17, at the Seattle Asian Art Museum.
