Community workshops to decorate 12-foot giant skeleton calaveras with marigolds, tassels and traditional items for Dia de Muertos at Pike Place Market.
Pike Place Market is bringing Dia de Los Muertos to the market for the first time, and they're starting with a project that's hard to miss: twelve-foot giant skeleton calaveras displayed throughout the market. From Tuesday, October 6, through Friday, October 23, there are workshops where the community is invited to help bring these figures to life. You'll be dressing them in marigolds, tassels, pressed-tin frames, sombreros, and headdresses, so if you've ever wanted to spend an evening decorating a twelve-foot skeleton, this is your chance.
The workshops run from 6 PM to 9 PM each session, and no registration is required—you just show up and get to work. It's a collaborative effort, and the more people who drop in, the more those skeletons will change over the course of the few weeks. The whole thing is a partnership between Dia de Muertos PNW, Downtown Art Walk, El Centro de la Raza, The Rabbit Box, and the Seattle Office of Economic Development.
It all leads up to the main event on Friday, October 23, when the market hosts a full Dia de Los Muertos celebration from 12 PM to 9 PM. The tradition is described as one of the market's oldest and most beloved gatherings, honoring deceased loved ones with music, dance, performances, and traditional costumes. By the time that day rolls around, the skeletons you helped dress will be part of the scenery.
