A vibrant community celebration of Día de los Muertos featuring art, music, traditional costumes, food, face painting, and a parade of Catrinas through Pike Place Market.
Pike Place Market is hosting Día de los Muertos on Friday, October 23, from 12 PM to 9 PM. It's the first time the city is celebrating the holiday at the Market, one of Seattle's oldest gathering places. The day is set up as a community gathering to honor deceased loved ones with music, dance, performances, traditional costumes, and handmade masks and decorations. It's presented in partnership with Día de Muertos PNW, the Downtown Art Walk, El Centro de la Raza, The Rabbit Box, and the Seattle Office of Economic Development.
If you want to get involved before the day itself, there's a full week of community workshops leading up to it. From October 6 to 22, people can come in and craft twelve-foot skeleton calaveras, masks, pressed-tin frames, and headdresses. Those workshops are where a lot of the decorations you'll see on the 23rd actually come from.
On the day, you can shop from Mexican artists and makers and eat authentic Mexican cuisine. There are public altars where you can leave offerings for loved ones and pets, and the Seattle Catrinas will be there to paint faces. Over in Pike Plaza by Target, you can watch Lucha Libre. The whole thing closes in the evening with a parade of dozens of Catrinas, dancing devils, and caballos bailadores moving through the Market's historic district.
