Concert by Edmonton singer-songwriter Calvin Love, blending 1950s and 1960s pop with punk and electronic new wave, at the Chop Suey venue.
Calvin Love plays Chop Suey on Monday, October 5, with Scott Yoder and Lilo Sanchez opening. Love is a singer-songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta, and he's the main draw of the night.
His music is punk-fueled pop and dance, and he describes it as a sonic escape that blends 1950s and 1960s pop with the punk and electronic new wave of the late 1970s and 1980s. It's a wide reach—the early pop melodies meeting the jagged edges of punk and the synth-heavy textures of new wave—and he pulls them into the same set. His first album, Super Future, came out on Arts & Crafts and steeps songs of psychedelic wisdom in celestial sensuality. Reviewers have called him an enigma, a strutting, crooning contradiction as menacing as he is magnetic.
With Scott Yoder and Lilo Sanchez on the bill, the night starts with two openers before Love takes the stage. The whole thing is at Chop Suey, 1325 E Madison St, in Seattle.
