Concert by the Oakland-based electronic fusion group Beats Antique at Nectar Lounge.
Beats Antique play Nectar Lounge on Friday, December 18, with the show starting at 7 PM. They're an Oakland-based group, and this is their Seattle date for the month.
If you haven't come across them yet, the sound is a bit of a puzzle. They fuse Middle Eastern traditions with West Coast circus, underground hip hop, breakbeat brass band, downtempo, glitch and dubstep. It's a lot to fit into one set, and the different pieces don't always sit in the same place. One moment you're hearing belly dancing rhythms, the next it's electronic, ethnic fusion, world music, bass music and downtempo. The Middle Eastern influence is the thread that runs through it, but the electronic side pulls it in a few different directions.
That mix is exactly what they're known for. The Middle Eastern elements bring the melody and the rhythm, while the hip hop, breakbeat, and dubstep provide the low end and the glitchy textures. It's a sound that sits between a dance floor and a world music stage, and they're the ones putting it all together under one roof. The set will pull from those same traditions and electronic styles, with the Middle Eastern influence and the bass-heavy production working side by side.
