Free, all-ages workshop to make a parol, the traditional star-shaped Christmas lantern of Filipino culture, at Kerry Hall for Filipino American History Month.
Kerry Hall in Capitol Hill is hosting a Parol Making Workshop on Saturday, October 17, from 1 PM to 2 PM. It's part of Bayanihan Fest, presented by STG (Seattle Theatre Group), and it's open to all ages. You don't need to register in advance, and all the supplies are provided, so you can just show up and get to work.
The workshop centers on the parol, the traditional star-shaped Christmas lantern of Filipino culture. They're made from bamboo and festive paper, and the session is about making your own from scratch. If you've never done it before, that's fineโit's a hands-on activity, not a class for experts.
The festival itself celebrates Filipino American History Month, which is observed every October. The month commemorates the first Filipinos arriving in the continental United States in Morro Bay, California, on October 18, 1587, and highlights the history and contributions of Filipino Americans. The parol is a well-known part of that cultural heritage, especially around the holidays.
