Screening of the documentary 'A Place of Absence' by Marialuisa Ernst within the 18th Annual Seattle Latino Film Festival.
The Beacon Cinema is screening A Place of Absence on Saturday, October 10, as part of the 18th Annual Seattle Latino Film Festival. The festival runs from October 9 through October 17, so this is one of several screenings happening across the city over that week.
A Place of Absence is a documentary by Marialuisa Ernst that follows Central American mothers searching for their disappeared migrant children across Mexico and the United States. It's a heavy subject, and the film doesn't shy away from it. Ernst frames the whole journey through her own history as an immigrant whose uncle disappeared during the Argentine dictatorship, and in doing so, she links the trauma of present-day migration to a longer history of forced disappearances across the Americas. It's as much about the specific families she follows as it is about the pattern that connects them.
The film has already picked up some recognition on the festival circuit. It had its world premiere at Doc NYC and its international premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), so it's coming to Seattle with a bit of a track record behind it. If you've been following the festival, this is one of the main features they're highlighting this year.
