Soul and mod revival band The Untouchables, former members of the legendary new wave group Oingo Boingo, perform live at Music Box SD.
The Untouchables and Oingo Boingo Former Members are sharing a bill at Music Box on Saturday, October 24, 2026. It's a double bill of two Los Angeles bands that both built their names in the 1980s, and they're bringing that Southern California connection down to San Diego for the night.
Oingo Boingo Former Members is exactly what it sounds like: alumni of the new wave group playing the songs that made them known. The set draws from the hits, with 'Dead Man's Party', 'Weird Science', 'We Close Our Eyes', 'Only a Lad', 'Just Another Day', 'Stay', 'Out Of Control', 'Who Do You Want To Be' and 'Gratitude' all on the list. The lineup brings back original 1980s and 1990s members Johnny 'Vatos' Hernandez, Sam 'Sluggo' Phipps, Carl Graves, Steve Bartek and John Avila, joined by Jose Maldonado on vocals, Mike Glendinning on guitar, Freddy Hernandez on bass and Brian Swartz on trumpet. They've been selling out California venues since 2005, and the Los Angeles City Council declared April 20, 2016, as official 'Oingo Boingo Day'. KROQ's Richard Blade called them 'the best Oingo Boingo band until Hell freezes over'.
The Untouchables are Los Angeles mod pioneers who started in 1981 and are credited with shaping the US ska sound. They got their start as skaters and scooter boys and appeared in cult films like Repo Man, The Party Animal and Surf II. Between the two acts, the night covers a good stretch of the West Coast's new wave and mod scenes.
