Planetarium show led by astronomer Lisa Will, followed by outdoor telescope viewing on Palomar Mountain.
The Sky Tonight: Weekend Edition is back at the Fleet Science Center on Sunday, October 11, as part of the center's live astronomy series. Resident Astronomer Lisa Will leads the program, which is designed to connect you to the celestial events unfolding around us—seasonal constellations, planetary movements, and the latest space discoveries. Each session walks through the stories, the science, and the wonder behind what you can see and how to experience it.
The show starts inside the center's immersive Giant Dome Theater, where Will guides the audience through the night sky. From there, the experience moves outdoors. The series partners with the San Diego Astronomy Association, which sets up telescopes on the Prado by the Bea Evenson Fountain for night-sky viewing, weather permitting. It's a two-part thing: you get the context and the stories under the dome, and then you get to actually look at the stars yourself.
For a bit of background on where you'll be, the Fleet Science Center opened in 1973 in Balboa Park and is the city's best-attended museum, with more than 100 interactive science exhibits across eight galleries. The dome theater is the Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Dome Theater, the world's first IMAX Dome Theater, which was refurbished in 2008 and upgraded in 2012.
