Monthly live astronomy series led by Resident Astronomer Lisa Will in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater, exploring seasonal constellations and space discoveries.
The Sky Tonight returns to the Fleet Science Center on Wednesday, October 7, as part of the museum's monthly live astronomy series. Resident Astronomer Dr. Lisa Will leads the show inside the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater, where she walks the audience through the seasonal constellations, planetary movements, and the latest space discoveries. The whole point is to connect you to what's happening in the night sky right now, and the series describes it as an invitation to slow down and find your place in the universe.
It's one of the museum's oldest programs, and it goes back to the center's origins as a planetarium. The Heikoff Giant Dome Theater opened in 1973 with a tilted dome and the Space Transit Simulator projection system, and the series itself launched in 1978 as a Tuesday-night public show. The theater was renovated in 2012, and the program has since grown beyond the dome. A partnership with the San Diego Astronomy Association brings telescopes to the Prado by the Bea Evenson Fountain when the weather holds, and in October 2025, the series expanded into The Sky Tonight: The Palomar Observatory Experience, which takes the show up to Palomar Mountain for a private tour of the Hale Telescope Dome, a lecture by a local astronomer, and stargazing.
