An evening of short improvised comedy performed by the students of Mockingbird Improv, a non-profit improv theatre in San Diego.
Mockingbird Improv is hosting its Student Show! on Sunday, October 11, at 7 PM. It's a night of short-form improvised comedy performed by the school's students rather than the house regulars, so you're seeing the people who've been training in the classes instead of the seasoned pros who usually anchor the stage.
Mockingbird Improv is a non-profit theater that opened in 2021 in Liberty Station's NTC Arts District. They run live comedy Thursday through Sunday and offer a full range of improv training, from Core Training and electives to youth classes. The Student Show! is one of their regular billings, and it's a good way to see the school's students put what they've been learning into practice. The theater also programs an Intro to Improv Workshop, Open Jams, Sketch Night, and SmackDown Sunday, and they state an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion mission.
If you're new to the scene, this is a low-stakes way to get a feel for how improv works. The short-form format means the show is built around quick games and scenes rather than one long story, so it moves fast and keeps things light. It's a different energy than the house regulars' nights—you're watching people who are still in the thick of their training, and that's part of the draw.
