A family-friendly guided tour for young learners and caregivers featuring interactive storytelling, art exploration and close-looking activities.
The San Diego Museum of Art is hosting its Storytime Family Tour on Thursday, October 8, from 9:50 to 10:30 AM. It's a monthly thing that happens on the second Thursday of the month, so if this one doesn't fit your schedule, there's another one coming around in November. The tour is led by museum docents and is built for young learners and their caregivers, with a recommended age range of 3 to 8, though all ages are welcome. Children under 14 need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian aged 18 or over.
The tour takes you through the museum's permanent collection and special exhibitions. Instead of just walking and looking, it's built around interactive conversations, close-looking activities, and age-appropriate storytelling. The docents guide families to pick out specific artistic elements—color, shape, texture, and narrative—so kids can start noticing how art is actually put together. Each session is inspired by that day's Storytime theme, which draws connections between books and works of art, and participants are encouraged to share their own observations and engage with the art through imagination and play.

At 10:30 AM, the tour wraps up and the docents lead everyone over to The San Diego Museum of Art Library for Storytime, a shared experience that links art, literacy, and creativity. Advance registration is requested. Admission to the museum is included in the tour price: it's free for SDMA members and youth 17 and under, and $25 for nonmembers. The museum is at 1450 El Prado in Balboa Park.
