Legendary Oakland hip-hop group Souls of Mischief perform live with Louis King, Sham Blak and Atlantis Rizing at Music Box.
Souls of Mischief are playing Music Box on Sunday, October 18, with Louis King, Sham Blak and Atlantis Rizing opening. It's a hip-hop night in the middle of India Street, and the headliners are an Oakland group that's been around since the early 90s.
If you're not familiar, Souls of Mischief consists of A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai. They first made a name for themselves with their 1993 debut, '93 'til Infinity, which peaked at number 17 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart and made The Source's Top 100 Rap albums in 1998. They followed that with No Man's Land in 1995, Focus in 1999, and Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution in 2000.
Beyond their own records, they're founding members of the Hieroglyphics collective, which they helped form in 1995. The collective put out 3rd Eye Vision in 1998 and Full Circle in 2003. Over three decades, the group has stayed creatively independent, keeping ownership of their work and dealing directly with their fans. They still tour as part of the Hieroglyphics, either with world champion DJ Lazyboy or in an expanded seven-piece live configuration.
