Tortured Soul live with DJ ALA, Cris Herrera, Mikeytown, Waterpark Jones, and Candi Cane, presented with Quartyard, Late Night Jackin, West Coast Weekender and The Deep End.
Tortured Soul are playing Quartyard on Sunday, October 11, as part of a day-long party called Souleil. The Brooklyn collective has been around for more than two decades, and this date marks the 16th anniversary of Souleil. They're the headliner, and they're sharing the bill with DJ ALA, Cris Herrera, Mikeytown, Waterpark Jones, and Candi Cane.
If you haven't seen them live, there's a specific thing to know about how they work: John-Christian Urich handles the drums and lead vocals at the same time. That live instrumentation is a big part of their sound, which blends deep, soulful grooves with a house foundation. They've spent over twenty-five years playing that intersection, and the influences show up in the mix—Prince, Heatwave, and Kool & The Gang are all in there. Over that time they've played more than 1,000 shows worldwide and put up over 35 million streams.
People often describe them as 'The Roots of House Music,' and that puts them in a particular spot: somewhere between neo-soul groups like Jamiroquai and Brand New Heavies and house producers like Joey Negro and Louie Vega. It's a live band playing house music, so it's as much about the musicianship as it is about the dance floor. The whole thing is presented by Quartyard along with Late Night Jackin, West Coast Weekender, and The Deep End.
