A Capoeira initiation and celebration ceremony where new students are welcomed into the roda and returning students are honoured for their growth and mastery.
WorldBeat Cultural Arts Center is hosting the San Diego Capoeira Batizado on Saturday, October 31, from 3 PM to 5 PM. It's an African Brazilian Capoeira initiation and celebration ceremony, and this year's edition features Mestre Touro and Mestre Preto Velho.
If you're not familiar with the term, batizado means 'baptism' in Portuguese. In the world of Capoeira, it's an initiation ceremony: new students are formally welcomed into the rodaโthe circle in which the art is playedโand returning students are honored for their growth and mastery. It works as both an initiation rite and a graduation, with masters invited from near and far to witness and lead the day.
Capoeira itself is a martial art woven together with dance, ritual, and gravity-defying acrobatics, and it's always played to music inside the roda. A roda opens with a ladainha, a litany sung by the most senior member, followed by chulas and corridos while the game is played. The music isn't just background; it drives the energy and the pace of the movements inside the circle.

With Mestre Touro and Mestre Preto Velho leading, you'll see the full arc of the tradition: the singing that opens the roda, the rhythmic songs that keep the game moving, and the players themselves working through the acrobatics and combat. It's a public celebration of the students' progress, so it's a great way to see Capoeira in its full context rather than just as a set of moves. The Batizado runs from 3 PM to 5 PM on Saturday, October 31, at the WorldBeat Cultural Arts Center, 2100 Park Blvd, San Diego, 92101.
