Baltimore psychedelic funk rock quartet Pigeons Playing Ping Pong perform with opening act Dizgo at The Observatory North Park.
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong are playing The Observatory North Park on Saturday, October 31, with Dizgo opening. The Baltimore quartet — Scott 'Scrambled Greg' Ormont on vocals and guitar, Jeremy Schon on guitar and vocals, Ben Carrey on bass and vocals, and Alex 'Gator' Petropulos on drums and vocals — are touring their eighth album, Feed The Fire, out on No Coincidence Records. They describe the record as pushing their psychedelic funk into its most expansive form yet.
There are a few firsts on Feed The Fire that stand out. The title track was co-written with Nashville guitarist Wes Bailey of Moon Taxi, the first time the group has co-written with someone outside the band. Ben Carrey takes the lead vocal on "Hit The Ground Runnin'", and the record features collaborations with horn sections Here Come The Mummies and West End Blend, with guest producer Chalk Dinosaur. It's a look at where the band is right now, and they'll be playing it live.
Opening for them is Dizgo, a Bloomington quartet that grew out of childhood jam sessions between Andrew Pickel and Kevin Hinnefeld. They're billed as "Indiana's psychedelic powerhouse" and are one of the more active names in the jam band scene, blending jamtronica, funk, soul, and psychedelic rock. Between the two acts, the night stays firmly in the jam and funk world.
