A day for members to explore research questions in the History Center's Research Archives, which holds 45 million documents and 2.5 million images.
The San Diego History Center is hosting another Member Research Day on Wednesday, October 14, from 9 AM to 12 PM. It's a morning set aside for members to spend time in the Center's Research Archives, the kind of session where you can actually sit with a specific question or a particular topic and work through it without rushing. These days usually happen once a month, so if you missed the last one, this is your next window.
To get a sense of what you're working with, the Research Archives hold the region's largest collection of historical materials: 45 million documents and 2.5 million images. The oral history collection is one of the most significant on the West Coast, documenting 150 years of regional history. It's a massive amount of primary source material—letters, photographs, recorded voices—all under one roof. If you've been following a specific family line, a particular neighborhood's changes, or some forgotten corner of San Diego's past, this is where the actual records live.
The History Center itself is in Balboa Park, and its whole mission is telling the region's story—past, present, and future—by educating the community, preserving history, and fostering civic pride. Throughout the year, they run dozens of public programs, including walking tours, lectures, exhibition receptions, curators' talks, films, and musical presentations. Those happen at both the History Center and the Serra Museum in Presidio Park, and they also publish the Journal of San Diego History. The Research Archives are the foundation for much of that work, and Member Research Days are one of the few times the general public gets a dedicated block of time to use them for their own projects.
