Shabaka brings his album 'Of The Earth' to a live performance at Future Is Color Studio Sessions, playing saxophone and flutes with Carlos NiƱo and RIVA.
Shabaka brings his new album Of The Earth to Quartyard on Thursday, October 8, as part of the FUTURE IS COLOR® Studio Sessions. He'll be joined on stage by Carlos Niño and RIVA, with Shabaka handling both saxophone and flutes.
If you've followed him, you know him as a multi-instrumentalist and composer who came up in the London scene playing with Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming, and Shabaka and the Ancestors. At the start of 2024, he announced a hiatus from the saxophone and has since been composing for the various flutes he's studying. This show is one of the first times that shift comes into the live setting, with Of The Earth as the record he's working from.
His live shows draw on hip-hop performances: the track booms through the system while he commands the stage, playing both saxophone and flutes. He envisions a hybrid laboratory of synthesizers and samplers manipulated on the fly, with improvisation layered over familiar frameworks. Collaboration and the idea of developmental change sit at the heart of his practice, and he often performs as a duo with a rotating drummer/producer pairing, aiming for an elasticity that ensures no two nights are alike.
