A family-friendly drop-in session where participants create paper marigolds for a community ofrenda while learning about Día de los Muertos traditions.
History Explorers: Día de los Muertos is at the San Diego History Center on Saturday, October 10, from 11 AM to 2 PM. It's a drop-in session for families and visitors of all ages, so you don't need to arrive right at the start to get in on it.
The activity is simple: you make vibrant paper marigolds and add them to the center's community ofrenda. While you're working, you'll learn about the traditions, symbolism, and meaning of Día de los Muertos. It's a hands-on way to get a feel for the holiday, and since the marigolds go onto a shared altar, your work stays behind as part of something bigger. The center describes it as a mix of art and historical exploration, and the whole thing is open to everyone—kids, parents, and anyone else who wants to stop by.
This is part of the San Diego History Center's family education programs, and the center itself tells the diverse story of the region—past, present, and future—through interactive activities that bring the stories of San Diego and its people to life. The goal is to educate the community, preserve local history, and foster civic pride, and this session fits right into that.
