Free dedication and ribbon-cutting event celebrating four years of community collaboration and the work of more than a dozen local artists on the CommUnity Mural Project.
Greater Logan Heights is having a mural dedication and ribbon-cutting on Saturday, October 10, at 37 20th Street in San Diego. It's the official wrap on the CommUnity Mural Project, a four-year effort that brought together more than a dozen local artists and contributions from community members to celebrate the history, culture, music and stories of Greater Logan Heights.
The project reclaims and reimagines the public spaces beneath the Interstate 5 and State Route 15 overpasses along Imperial Avenueโspots that once divided neighborhoods. The I-5 mural focuses on the past, present and future of Greater Logan Heights, while the SR-15 mural turns the freeway pillars into a celebration of the community's musical heritage. It's a lot of ground to cover, and the two murals each take a different angle on the neighborhood.
Leading the project was the Logan Heights CDC, a community-based nonprofit founded in 1995, working in partnership with Caltrans, SANDAG and the City of San Diego. Funding came from California's Clean California Initiative. The dedication is the moment the whole thing is officially handed over to the public.
