Free guided art tours for families with school-aged children, followed by a hands-on art-making activity.
Family Art Adventures is back at The San Diego Museum of Art on Saturday, October 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. It's a guided tour built for families with school-aged children, ages 5 to 12, and it's free with Museum admission. The program runs the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, so if you miss this one, there's another coming up later in October.
Each session works the same way: a guided tour through the galleries, followed by a hands-on art-making activity where the kids get to create something themselves. The theme changes every month, and the museum provides all the materials, so you don't need to bring anything but the kids. The program is supported in memory of Debbie Cooke.
If you've never spent much time inside, the museum is a Balboa Park cornerstone that's been there since its inauguration in 1926, with the Fine Arts Gallery opening on February 28 of that year. It holds a broad collection of European, American, Latin American, and Asian art, and it's best known for its Spanish old master paintings. Beyond the galleries, there's a sculpture garden and a Museum Store with one of the city's most comprehensive selections of art books. There's also a free mobile app with 200 insider stories and augmented reality experiences you can use while you're walking around.
